Determining the actual square footage of your roof is the crucial first step to buying raw materials. A flat home footprint cannot simply be measured with tapes along the ground; the pitch slope determines the actual physical surface area. Use our dynamic calculator below to determine roofing squares and shingle bundles. Consult the breakdown of standard material grades in our Cost Per Square Foot Analysis Guide.

What is a "Roofing Square"?
In standard construction, material ordering indices use the "Roofing Square" as the primary unit of measurement. One Roofing Square is equivalent to exactly 100 square feet of actual physical slope territory. Material manufacturers box shingles inside individual bundles structured exactly such that three standard bundles cover exactly one Roofing Square. In addition, when ordering roll-based sub-roof components (like self-adhering waterproof ice membranes), each roll is packaged to spread exactly across two to four squares.
